Kids need a place to play, create, and just be themselves. But you need a space that does not make you want to pull your hair out every time you walk by. The solution? A designated kid space—organized together, so it works for everyone!
What Is a Kid Space?
- An area in your home just for your kids’ activities—art, homework, building, reading, or even getting a little messy.
- It can be a corner of the living room, a playroom, a nook under the stairs, or even part of their bedroom.
Why Create One?
- Gives kids ownership and responsibility for their toys, books, and stuffies.
- Keeps the rest of your home from turning into a toy tornado.
- Allows kids to be creative and messy—without you stressing about the mess everywhere else.
- Makes cleanup easier (for everyone!).
How to Get Started (Together!)
1. Pick the Space
- Ask your kids where they would like their space.
- Choose somewhere you can supervise but that feels special to them.
2. Sort and Declutter
- Go through toys, art supplies, and games together.
- Decide what to keep, donate, or toss.
- Let your kids help, they will be more likely to keep it tidy!
3. Organize with Your Kids
- Use bins, baskets, shelves, or drawers.
- Label everything (pictures for little ones, words for readers).
- Store favorite items at kid-height so they can reach them.
4. Make It Fun and Inviting
- Let your kids decorate their space with art, photos, or their favorite colors.
- Add a comfy chair, a small table, or a cozy rug.
5. Set Some Ground Rules
- Agree on what activities are okay in the space (painting, building, reading, etc.).
- Decide together how often you will tidy up—daily, weekly, or after big projects.
6. Embrace the Mess (Sometimes)
- Remember: it is okay for the kid space to get messy during play!
- The goal is to contain the chaos, not eliminate it.
