Simple organizing systems we use in our homes that make packing easier.

Packing for vacation can truly make or break your experience.
There are so many moving pieces to juggle, outfits, toiletries, gear, chargers, and everything in between. You are trying to remember what you need, plan outfits, make sure everything fits, and avoid going over the airline weight limit.
Starting from scratch each trip, while also planning flights, activities, and lodging, can feel exhausting. That is the opposite of how you want to feel before a vacation.
As professional organizers, we see this every spring break season: suitcases open on the bed, piles of clothes everywhere, and a growing list of “don’t forget this.”
The good news is that packing does not have to feel chaotic. With a few simple systems, you can move from last-minute stress to feeling calm and prepared. Whether it is a weekend getaway or a longer trip, packing is one part of travel you can control.
Below are a few simple systems I use in my own home and often help clients set up before big trips.
Before You Pack: Create a Travel Home Base
Set up a small system once so every trip becomes easier.
One of the biggest mistakes people make is treating every trip like a one-time event.
Instead of starting over each vacation, create a designated travel zone in your home. Think of it as a small “travel home base” where everything you need already lives. This reduces decision fatigue and makes packing faster every time.
Your travel station might include:

Clear organizers and designated travel bags makes it easy to grab, pack, and restock essentials after each trip.
- A clear bin or basket for travel-size toiletries and first aid
- A dedicated space for small bags and pouches
- A spot for travel accessories and gadgets such as a passport holder or luggage scale
In my own bathroom, I created a travel home base inside my cabinet. Clear containers and labeled baskets with simple categories make it easy to grab what I need without digging through multiple drawers or bags.

A small “travel zone” under the sink keeps travel-size products, backstock, and first-aid items organized and ready for the next trip
This same type of system can easily be created in a bathroom cabinet, linen closet, or drawer so travel essentials are always ready for the next trip.
Plan Your Outfits Before You Pack
A little planning prevents overpacking.
One of the simplest ways to avoid overpacking is planning outfits ahead of time.
Instead of throwing extra options into your suitcase “just in case,” choose outfits that work together and can be mixed and matched throughout the trip.
This small step keeps your suitcase lighter, makes packing faster, and helps you avoid the stress of figuring out what to wear while traveling.

Planning outfits ahead of time helps keep your suitcase organized and prevents unnecessary overpacking.
During Packing: Create Order Inside the Suitcase
Containment keeps everything easy to find.
A suitcase without structure quickly becomes a black hole. Packing like a pro means creating clear categories inside your bag. Clear zipper pouches with labels make it easy to separate toiletries, first aid, and in-flight essentials.
Clear zipper pouches keep small items organized and easy to find while traveling.
We recommend:
- Mesh packing cubes for clothing, grouped by outfit or category
- Clear zipper pouches for keeping small items like toiletries organized and protected during travel
- Shoe bags to contain dirt and a laundry bag for worn items
- A cord organizer for chargers and a small jewelry case to prevent tangling
These are the same types of products I use in my own travel setup as a professional organizer, many of which can be found at The Container Store.
I often recommend them to clients because they can make a huge difference when you’re searching for something mid-trip. Instead of digging through layers of clothing, everything has a clear place.
The main goal is containment. When everything has a boundary, it is easier to find what you need and repack at the end of your trip.
After You Arrive: Unpack Immediately
A quick reset makes the rest of your trip easier.
This is the step most people skip, and it makes a big difference.
When I arrive at my destination, I take 10 to 15 minutes to:
- Hang delicate clothing
- Place toiletries in the bathroom
- Assign a drawer or shelf for folded items
- Set up my laundry bag and shoes
Unpacking immediately prevents the frustration of digging through your suitcase every morning. Everything is visible, accessible, and easier to maintain throughout your stay.
Even a small hotel room or vacation rental feels more relaxing when your belongings have a temporary “home.”
While organizing homes, we often say the goal is not perfection, it is reducing friction. The same principle applies here. A quick reset at the start of your trip allows you to fully enjoy your time away.
Control What You Can
Travel may be unpredictable, but preparation doesn’t have to be.
Travel will always include unpredictable elements, delays, weather, and schedule changes. Packing and preparation, however, are fully within your control. When you build simple systems before, during, and after packing, you reduce stress and protect your energy.
If setting up systems like this feels overwhelming, it’s something we help people tackle all the time.
At Meat & Potatoes Organizing, we help clients throughout Minneapolis, Saint Paul, Edina, and surrounding areas, create practical, sustainable systems that support real life. That includes implementing dedicated travel zones in your home, organizing luggage and accessories, and offering hands-on packing support before a big trip.
Whether you need help preparing for vacation or want professional home organizing services that simplify everyday routines, our goal is always the same: create systems that make life feel lighter.
Because the goal of vacation is not chaos.
It is to rest, reset and actually enjoy the trip you worked so hard to plan.
