Move-in organization and packing services that get you settled fast.
By Erin Fortman
You just signed the lease on a place you love. The kitchen has great light. The bathroom is spotless. The closets are bigger than your last ones.
And then the movers leave and suddenly every single one of those rooms is buried under a wall of cardboard.
This is the part nobody talks about when you’re excited about a new home. Moving in is chaotic, and most people just survive it. Boxes get half-unpacked. Things land wherever there’s space. The part you were actually excited about, decorating, making it yours, figuring out where the gallery wall goes, keeps getting pushed back because you’re still living out of boxes three weeks in.
We showed up to fix exactly that.
The Starting Point
A beautiful new apartment and way too many boxes.
When we arrived, the kitchen island was covered. The bathroom had a box tower stacked up to the mirror. The laundry closet was doing its best impression of a storage unit.
This is a brand new apartment with nice finishes, good layout, and genuinely exciting space. The kind of place you move into with a vision. Whether you’re relocating within the Twin Cities or coming in from out of town, upgrading for more living space, or downsizing to simplify, a move is a big change. There are a lot of little details to think through, and trying to manage all of it on your own while also, you know, living your life, it adds up fast. The decorating plans you had in your head on signing day get buried right along with everything else.

Day one. Great kitchen, no plans.

The bathroom before we got to it.

The laundry closet holding everything that didn’t have a home yet.
The Unpack
Working room by room until it actually functions like a home.
The goal on day one isn’t a reveal. It’s making sure our clients can cook dinner, find their toothbrush, and do a load of laundry without opening seventeen boxes to get there. Because once the functional stuff is handled, the fun stuff can actually begin.
We start with the spaces that matter most. Bedrooms are usually quick and efficient, so we like to knock those out first and get them off the list. Kitchen next, then the rest.
The kitchen is always the most involved. For this project, we worked cabinet by cabinet. Everyday dishes at eye level and close to the dishwasher, entertaining pieces and seasonal items up top, less used cooking and baking tools tucked out of the way. Drawers got organizers, because adding that structure from the start makes the whole space feel intentional instead of improvised. Under the sink got sorted as well, because cleaning supplies shoved in a pile is a problem that compounds fast.
We work through each room with the client’s habits in mind as best we can. We can’t perfectly predict how someone will use a brand new space, and we’ll be upfront about that. But we can make sure everything has a home on day one, and that head start matters more than people expect. The decorating vision you had moving in is a lot easier to act on when the space is actually clear.

Every cabinet with a purpose, every drawer with a category. The coffee station is all set up.
The laundry room and bathrooms are easy to miss during a move. There’s always something more pressing, and before you know it you’re a month in and still fishing cleaning supplies out of a grocery bag shoved under the sink.
We sorted the bathroom vanity with personal care in its place, cleaning products together, and counter cleared. The laundry room got its rolling cart stocked and baskets on the shelf.

Counter cleared, cabinet sorted. No more mystery bottles.

From holding zone to functional laundry room in an afternoon.
One thing worth mentioning: as we unpack, we’re also noticing. A new home doesn’t always have the same storage layout as the last one, and sometimes what worked before won’t translate. On the day of the unpack we’ll often use placeholders to get things functional and flag the areas that might benefit from a different storage solution, a bin that would work better, a layout switch that makes more sense. You’ll leave the day with a working home and a short list of what could make it even better. Less guesswork, more time spent on the parts that are actually enjoyable.
The Result
Settled in one day. Not three weeks.
Our clients walked into their new home that evening and could actually use it. Not perfectly. Figuring out how you live in a new space takes time, and that’s normal. But the boxes were gone, the cabinets made sense, and nothing was living on the floor.
That’s when it clicks. When the unpacking is handled, the whole energy of moving shifts. Instead of spending your evenings digging through boxes trying to find the one thing you need, you’re actually looking at your space. Thinking about it. Enjoying it. Picking out throw pillows instead of wondering where you packed the can opener.
That’s the good part. And it’s a lot closer than you think.
How Meat and Potatoes Organizing Can Help
As professional organizers serving Minneapolis, Saint Paul, Edina, and surrounding areas, we’ve seen every version of move-in chaos and we know how to get through it fast.
Every client is a little different. Some prefer a hands-off approach, hand us the keys and come home to a finished space. Others like to be part of the process, making decisions room by room as we go. Both are completely valid, and honestly, both are our favorite kind of project.
Got a move coming up? We offer move-in organization services and packing services that get your home functional from day one. Whether it’s one room or the whole place, we show up with a plan and get it done so you can skip straight to the good part.
