How many hours are you spending on TikTok per day? The average in America is 1 hour. If you are unfamiliar with TikTok, it continues to learn which videos you enjoy watching and then provides you with more content that you spend the most time on. During the COVID-19 pandemic, TikTok saw a massive uptick in both the volume of cleaning posts and interactions with it. This gave rise to the term “CleanTok.”
What is CleanTok?
I will be the first to say that I particularly enjoy CleanTok, most of the time. It is a great resource to get ideas on how to clean or organize a particular area of your home. I have used it many times to learn how to deep clean my washer, get a stain out of a shirt, or get ideas for how to best organize my closet. However, we also must be realistic. Sometimes I watch a CleanTok video of a “Sunday reset” and cannot help but think “how do they have the time to accomplish all of that on a Sunday?” It can sometimes make us feel like we are not accomplishing enough.
How Meat and Potatoes Organizing can help:
Meat and Potatoes Organizing is here to tell you – that IT IS OKAY. It is okay to not have a formal “Sunday Reset” routine. It is okay to not have a formal cleaning schedule. It is okay to have a messy storage room or a messy closet. Our team of professional organizers specializes in meeting you exactly where you are at, in a judgment free zone to help you dream of what your spaces could look like in an ideal world. We specialize in helping you maximize your spaces, streamline your daily routines, and reduce stress.
This blog is going to give you some ideas on where to start and rest assured, feel free to Reset, Restart, and Refocus as many times as you want to. If at any point it feels overwhelming, you can always reach out for a complimentary consultation, and we can dream with you to make your space your own 😊
Now, you just watched a CleanTok video, and you would like to clean your whole house top to bottom.
Here are some steps on where to start!
Step 1: Determine How Much Time You Have. Do you have 30 minutes or 4 hours? The amount of cleaning you are going to get done in that time is going to be vastly different. So be realistic with how much time you must complete your tasks.
Step 2: Do you have the materials? Did you just watch a video on deep cleaning your oven where they use a particular solution? Do you need to buy that solution? If so, that is not going to get done right now – but you can add that solution to your next shopping trip. 😊 Remember, it is okay that you do not have all those things on hand! Many of these “CleanTok” influencers are professional cleaners and do this for their work.
Step 3: Set a timer and get moving. One tip we have implemented at our house is “30-minute pickups” once per day! We set the timer for 30 minutes and everyone in the house picks up & cleans their respective areas of the home for 30 minutes. We are happy with what gets done in that 30 minutes and we leave the deep cleaning for another time.
Step 4: Celebrate what you have achieved in the time you selected. If there are areas of your home that will take more focused dedication time, we recommend planning it in your schedule.
Block out however many hours you think you will need for that deep cleaning process and stick to it. Even on that day, follow these steps – make sure you have the materials, set that timer, get moving, and then celebrate what you have accomplished.
As a reminder, the internet shows you all the positive sides of cleaning. Sometimes you get knee deep in a project and realize there is a lot more that you have uncovered than you thought. It is okay, take a deep breath. Everyone comes across those moments. You can do hard things😊 Not sure you can tackle this alone? Reach out to schedule your complimentary consultation with one of our professional organizers today! Meat and Potatoes can help you declutter one area at a time. We would love to help spark joy in your everyday life by transforming your home into functional, beautiful spaces, one area at a time.
