Holiday decorations should sparkle—not overwhelm. A thoughtful plan and smart storage will help you create a festive, tidy home. Did you know the professional organizers at Meat and Potatoes Organizing can help with Christmas Decorating? They are excellent at helping you decorate for Christmas while not feeling cluttered or overwhelmed.
Let us play a game – how many lights do you think you will need for a 7-foot tree? The answer will be at the end of the post!
Now, let us get down to business! The professional organizers each use the following plan every time, and we are outlining them here so you can follow them too!
Start with a Theme & Plan: Choose a guiding theme and create a décor map for each area (tree, mantel, entryway, dining table). Do you have enough decorations for this year? Are you going for white & gold? Green & red? Something different? Planning your theme will help make sure that any decorations you buy will be in plan 😊
Sort, Edit, and Store: Inventory all décor, donate extras, and use labeled bins for ornaments, lights, and garlands. This is the most important step! Taking inventory before you start decorating is going to help you not over-buy when you go to the store and allow you to make a plan based on decorations you already have 😊 Are there decorations that you continue to leave in your bins downstairs? Now might be a good time to donate/purge those items.

Balance Beauty & Function: Avoid blocking walkways and vents. Use trays for décor so surfaces remain easy to clean. Sometimes it is easy to get a little “Christmas Crazy” and put decorations everywhere! Although we are big fans of Christmas decorations, we want to make sure your house continues to feel cozy and usable. You want to be able to walk through a hallway, eat at your table, or make cookies in your kitchen. So, make sure when you are making your plan, you are leaving your functional spaces, functional!
Does this all seem overwhelming? The professional organizers at Meat and Potatoes Organizing can help! Schedule your complimentary consultation today. Did you stick with us to the end? A 7-foot tree will take 700-1000 lights depending on how generous you are 😊
