We absolutely LOVE this time of year at Meat and Potatoes! For many, the holidays are a time of joy and positive family time. For others, this time of year might bring a little bit more stress. So, if you are hosting people at your house – we are going to teach you how to set up your guest room to make your guests feel welcome and at ease. This starts with prioritizing a clutter-free space, comfortable bedding, and readily available amenities in case they forget one of the essentials.
We have helped to organize many guest rooms and here are our key elements we would make sure to include to ensure a pleasant experience for your guests.
- Comfortable Bedding
Invest in high-quality sheets, a supportive mattress, and a variety of pillows to ensure a good night’s sleep. Have you ever tried to sleep using a hotel pillow? Do you know the ones I am talking about – the ones that feel like you are sleeping on rocks? No? How about the ones that feel like you are sinking into a cloud? Either way – each guest you have is going to have a different preference – so to ensure the best experience, have a few of each on the bed to provide them with options.
- Clear Space for Luggage
Provide a designated area for suitcases, like a bench at the foot of the bed, a dresser, or a spacious closet. If you ever travel with your significant other or spouse, do you race into the hotel room so you can put your suitcase on the luggage rack? There are some inexpensive luggage rack options and can elevate your space to make your guests feel like there is an easy place for them to put their items.
- Adequate Lighting
Although darkness can be great for sleeping, it is not great if you are wanting it to be light. We recommend that you include both overhead lighting and bedside lamps for flexibility and a cozy ambience. This will give your guest options on what type of lighting works best for whatever they are doing.
- Personal Touches
Add a vase of fresh flowers, a small plant, or a decorative piece to add personality to the room. This can be something simple like fake flowers, a cute picture, or a house plant – but adding some decorations can elevate a space immediately.
- Basic Amenities
Stock up on toiletries like soap, shampoo, conditioner, towels, and extra toilet paper. If you are looking to really elevate the space you can also add in extras like face masks, face wash, ChapStick, etc. This will give your guest the feeling of being pampered and relaxed while at your house.
- Wi-Fi Access:
This one has become much more prevalent now that everything requires Wi-Fi to run! Display the Wi-Fi password prominently on a nightstand or a small, framed sign. We have seen some extremely cute displays of Wi-Fi passwords and would be happy to give you templates or ideas to help you make this accessible to your guests.
- Snacks and Drinks
We put this one last because it is highly optional! Depending on if you allow food in different areas of your home – but if you have someone special coming to visit, you can leave a small selection of their favorite snacks, and bottled water or their favorite drinks to snack on and enjoy. Although “guest rooms” might not be on the top of your organization list for your home – ensuring your guests are comfortable and have a comfortable space to be in will encourage them to come back… if that is what you want 😉. If you would like help choosing what to put in your guest room or organizing the room to provide a peaceful environment, our Meat and Potatoes Professional Organizers would be happy to help!
